Back ground Information
MRC/UVRI Uganda research Unit on AIDS, based at the Uganda Virus
Research Institute, Entebbe invites applications from suitably
qualified Ugandans for the following contractual posts.
These posts have become available on a one-year renewable grant from the ALPHA Network.
The ALPHA Network started in 2005 and links existing African
HIV cohort studies. It aims to maximise the usefulness of data generated in community-based
longitudinal HIV studies in sub-Saharan Africa for national and international
agencies involved in designing or monitoring interventions and epidemiological
forecasting. The ALPHA network is funded by The Wellcome Trust and is in its
second phase (2010-15), with additional funding from the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation to investigate the pattern of mortality among HIV positive
adults in Eastern and Southern Africa in the era of antiretroviral therapy. The
network is coordinated by the Department of Population Health at the London
School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Overall Job purpose:
The successful candidate will organise and prepare datasets
according to ALPHA specifications, and will be involved in the data cleaning
and management of some of the datasets.
S(he) will carry out the analysis for the project data and
is expected to contribute to and initiate scientific publications.
This post is suitable for statisticians interested in a
career in medical research or academics.
This position reports to the Senior Statistician and will be
based in Entebbe with frequent travels to field station in Kyamulibwa
Qualifications and
Experience:
Essential:
• An honours Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related
field.
• A Master’s degree in Statistics, Epidemiology, Demography,
Clinical Trials, or a related field.
• 2 years’ experience in statistical analysis using STATA.
• 2 years’ experience in database management using Ms
Access, STATA or EPIINFO.
Desirable:
• Experience in medical research

with possibility of renewal subject to performance and availability of funding.

An attractive salary commensurate with qualifications and
experience will be paid as per MRC salary structure.
