Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS

Background Information
The MRC/UVRI Uganda Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established
following a request in 1988 from the Uganda Government to the British
Government for collaboration on the research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency
Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency.
The Unit is a center of
excellence in HIV/AIDS related research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological
and intervention studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research
and behavioral studies, clinical trials, virological and immunological research
and behavioral studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that
have been used to inform policy and practice, and that have led to a large
number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals over time. The Unit
is based at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe.
MRC/UVRI is seeking keen, experienced and suitably qualified
Ugandans to join a team of dedicated clinical and research staff working on the
IPM 027 trial “A multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled safety
and efficacy trial of a dapivirine vaginal matrix ring in healthy HIV-negative
women”.
All positions will be based at the Unit’s Field station in Masaka.
Terms: These positions will be remunerated according to the
Ugandan MRC/UVRI Unit salary scales. The initial appointments will be for a
period of up to 1 year with a possibility of extension based on performance and
availability of funds.

Post: Counselors (02 positions)
Reports to: Scientist
Position Objective:
To provide
high quality counseling for study participants and VCT in study communities with
the aim of reducing the risk of HIV infection and transmission.
Key roles and responsibilities;
•
Counselling (Pre and Post Testing) Sessions
•
HIV/AIDS education to community
•
Community mobilisation for VCT and existing
trials/Studies Promotion of condom use and other HIV prevention services.
•
Secure relevant counselling records safely.
•
Provide continuous risk reduction counselling
to study volunteers
•
Collect data on uptake of counselling
•
Provide crisis management, whenever needed
•
Keep participants results confidentially in a
secure place
•
Refer VCT clients where necessary.
Qualifications
and experience:
•
Minimum of a diploma in SWASA, Development studies
or a related field.
•
Must Have a certificate in Counseling from a recognized
institution
•
At least 2 years’ experience in a similar role
in a recognized health or research organization
•
Good interpersonal/communications skills.
•
Fluency in verbal and written English and
Luganda.
•
Highly organized, detail-oriented and
self-motivated.
•
Ability to ride a motorcycle will be an added advantage.
Post: Nursing Officer (2 positions)
Reports to: Scientist.
Job Purpose:
Provision
of study information and obtaining informed consent, collection of clinical and
non-clinical data and performance of other study related nursing roles.
Key roles and responsibilities;
•
Provide study information to participants and
obtain informed consent
•
Completion and maintenance of screening and enrolment
logs.
•
Participate in data collection through
administration of study questionnaires.
•
Carry out medical procedures related to the
clinical trial.
•
Report adverse events to study physicians.
•
Review and update clinic supplies and make requisitions
appropriately.
•
Track participants by phone or through field
workers to ensure attendance of study visits.
•
Offer appropriate health education and
counseling to patients and their attendants.
Qualifications
and experience:
•
Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery or comprehensive
nursing.
•
Training in public health, research methods,
ICH/GCP is desirable but not essential
•
Registration with Uganda Nurses and Midwifery Council.
•
A minimum of 3 years working experience in a
clinical setting.
•
Experience in working in a research setting is
an added advantage
•
Certificate in HIV/AIDS counseling and testing
and ICP/GCP training is added advantage.
•
Fluency in English and Luganda.
