The Research and Evaluation Unit supports BRAC in designing
development programmes, assessing progresses, documenting achievements, and
undertaking rigorous evaluations of its interventions, which cover diverse
dimensions of development including microfinance, agriculture, education and
health.

1. Research coordinator
Description of the
position:
BRAC is seeking a Research Coordinator to oversee and lead
the portfolio of research projects in Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Sierra
Leone and Liberia. The Research and Evaluation Unit works with development and
academic partners to evaluate approaches to solving development problems, to
communicate what works and does not work in development, and to scale up
successful projects.
The Research Coordinator will manage a portfolio of
approximately 25 projects. These projects span a range of areas, such as microfinance,
agriculture, education, youth and health. As part of its supervisory role, the
Research Coordinator will be based in Kampala and work closely with the
regional and local offices to ensure research projects are working within the
relevant policies and procedures.
Responsibilities and
tasks:
• Ensure project adherence in the field to general research
design, sample selection, data management and analysis, and overall project
management.
• Oversee project financial management
• Work with relevant departments to ensure sound human
resource development and operational management of projects.
• Directly supervise and mentoring project researchers
(Research Associates, Research Assistants, Field Supervisors), and help with
continuation and on-boarding of new research staff.
• Promote inter-project best practices and take a lead in
sharing best practices with projects through periodical meetings and training
opportunities.
• Attend meetings with development organizations,
universities, and government officials.
• Support the dissemination of results via presentations and
reports to academic and non-academic audiences.
• Maintain effective communication between BRAC
International, Country Representative and Program me Managers for all
developments on the research projects in Uganda.
Desired
qualifications and experience:
• Postgraduate degree, preferably Ph.D, in economics,
agricultural economics, development economics, sociology, anthropology, rural
development, or any other related field.
• At least 10 years of experience in conducting social
science or economic field research.
Experience in Africa is strongly preferred.
• Extensive experience supervising data collection, teams of
field workers, and survey design and implementation.
• Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work
successfully with diverse constituencies.
• Experience in conducting field research in developing
countries.
• Strong budgeting and financial management skills.
• Experience with presenting research findings at public
forums, including to non research focused audiences.
• Strong written and oral communication skills and complete
fluency in English
• Excellent analytical and demonstrated ability to write
reports and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
• Ability to combine quantitative and participatory research
methods.
Preferred
qualifications:
• Experience with data management, statistics, and advanced
knowledge of Statistics or any other statistical packages.
• Strong quantitative skills and familiarity with randomized
controlled trials.
• Ability to identify relevant partners, maintain existing
relations, and build new linkages and effectively facilitate stakeholder
processes on poverty issues.

position is based at Kampala, Uganda.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The BRAC Uganda Research and Evaluation Unit is looking for
a dynamic and articulate individual to join its team as the Research and
Knowledge Manager. The Research and Knowledge Manager will be primarily
responsible for:
• Developing a knowledge sharing strategy within the
research unit and the BRAC Uganda office, as well as a strategy for
disseminating Research Unit findings and information to a wider audience.
• Organize and facilitate monthly research team meetings
• Revise and edit research department reports and working
papers
• Use research department data and writings to create
research previews, research summaries, technical reports, and other documents
for a variety of audiences
• Develop a communication strategy for the research
department to share information with BRAC Programme Management
• Create and maintain in-house databases of relevant
material, including completed and on-going BRAC Uganda research projects and
external data such as journal articles or Uganda Bureau of Statistics data
• Promote inter-project best practices and take a lead in
sharing best practices with projects through formal and informal training
opportunities
• Develop and maintain the research department’s web
presence
• Develop a communication strategy for the research
department to share findings with a variety of outside audiences
• Liaise with other development and research institutions to
foster collaboration in ongoing and potential projects
• Present research findings and projects at a variety of
public forums, including to non research focused audiences
• Assist with data analysis on various research projects,
when necessary and time allowing
• Undertake independent research projects, time allowing
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Minimum Master’s Degree in Development Studies, Social
Sciences, or related discipline
• At least 5 years of work experience in a research capacity
or with a development organization
• Proven track record of excellent written pieces in popular
media
• Advanced written and oral communication skills for a
variety of audiences and purposes including blogs, academic journals, print
media, etc.
• Microsoft Office proficiency and some experience with data
analysis software such as Nvivo or STATA
• Familiarity with both qualitative and quantitative
research methodologies
• Experience managing complex projects
