for the post of Project Manager for a Wellcome Trust funded project
"TrypanoGEN", a pan African scientific research consortium based at
COVAB, Makerere University.

The project manager
will be responsible for:
(a) ensuring good
communication between network partners and the smooth running of the
administration, including adequate progress reporting,
(b) work closely with
the ethics manager, two administrative assistants and the network accountant,
and to ensure adequate financial reporting from the different network
administrative departments in accordance with the Wellcome Trust's
requirements,
(c) ensuring the
implementation of capacity building activities including organising network
meetings and training workshops and
(d) reporting back any problem from the network partners to
the management committee.
(e) Liaise
effectively with network members, collaborators, funding bodies, external
institutes and the public
MAIN DUTIES
• Conduct
and administer regular meetings with network partners, including minute taking.
• To be
responsible for interacting and liaising with the Well come Trust as the funder
and for producing detailed periodic reports as required.
• Co-ordinate
the training goals of the network.
• Organize
the network annual meetings and workshops as appropriate.
• Ensure
network partners comply with safety and ethical procedures (in partnership with
the ethics manager).
• Prepare a
regular newsletter for network partners, maintain the network website and
answer enquiries to the network from the public and external bodies.
• Support
public engagement activities on behalf of the network.
• Work
effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Influence
others effectively at all organisational levels internally and externally
• Provide
effective financial and operational management and advice for the network and
its scientists, liaising effectively with all the key stakeholders.
• Liaise
with other external and internal scientists effectively to ach ieve the
objectives of the research programme and to take accountability of effective
management of the network's research programme.
• Take a
pro-active and innovative approach in identifying new and sustainable funding
opportunities.
KNOWLEDGE,
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Essential
• Bachelors
degree in any of the biological science related fields
• Post
Graduate qualifications in project planning and management, human resource
management or public administration
• Proven
relevant project management experience, skills, and knowledge
• Ability
to communicate effectively to a high standard with a range of people and
organizations both orally and in writing.
• Highly
developed problem solving and organisation skills, with an ability to meet
competing deadlines.
• Good
interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with others
• Ability
to manage and to support management of financial and operational resources
Added advantage
• Previous
work (at least 2 years) in a similar position
• Familiarity
with Wellcome Trust grant operations
• Knowledge
of genetics or biology or having a background in biomedical research.
• Ability
to speak and write in English and French

Two year renewable contract subject to satisfactory performance appraisal.
