INTRODUCTION:
The Chief Research Officer
(CRO) serves as a Principal Assistant to the Director with responsibility for
the
overall initiation, planning, organization and direction of
all approved scientific research relevant to the DLCOEA
regional activities.
Specific areas of responsibility are
outlined below; however, he may be required to perform other duties which may
be delegated to him by the Director.
DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plans, directs and supervises all scientific research activities undertaken by the Organization and ensures
the issuance of technical reports.
2. Liaises with institutions/bodies within and outside the
region in matters pertaining to DLCO-EA research activities.
3. Coordinates with Director to conduct special operational
activities for research purposes.
4. Coordinates preparation of working papers for Technical
Committee meetings and acts as Technical Secretary for such meetings.
5. Plans and coordinates training programmers’ with the Divisions
of Administration and Finance to ensure that all research personnel are prescient
in their assigned duties.
6. Develops and improves pest management techniques for the
mandated migrant pests (Locusts, army worms, quelea birds and tsetse lies).
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
1. PhD in Entomology from a recognized University with at
least 5 years post-qualification experience in
leading or directing research programmers’ /projects associated
with plant protection.
2. Ability to work in harmony with people of different national
and cultural backgrounds is highly desirable.
3. Be computer literate and proficient in data collection analysis
and report writing.

INTRODUCTION:
The Research Officer (RO) is responsible for Scientific Research
in the Quelea Research Unit (Nairobi) of the Operational Research Division of
the DLCO-EA. The incumbent is responsible for carrying out and cooperating with
other Research Officers in the execution of research activities on Quelea
birds. However, the incumbent may be required to carry out any other duties
assigned to him by the Chief Research Officer.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Works closely with Air Unit during Quelea control operations
and particularly in the insecticide fi eld trials and Quelea surveys.
2. Initiates, plans and carries out investigations relevant to
the development of a new programme for regional control of Quelea.
3. Undertakes all the necessary fi eld work associated with the
development of the control work of quelea and other migrant pests as may be
required.
4. Carries out research work for promoting and updating the
knowledge of the biology, ecology and chemical control of quelea birds.
5. Participates actively in Quelea control operations in conjunction
with the Air Unit.
6. Prepares and participates in training for DLCO-EA staff and
nationals of DLCO-EA Member States.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
1. A Masters degree in Biological Sciences from a recognized
University.
2. A PHd in relevant fi eld will be advantageous. In addition,
at least 5 years post-graduate experience of
the Quelea control and other migrant pests’ research and control
problems.
3. Ability to work in harmony with people of different national
and cultural backgrounds is highly desirable.
4. Be computer literate and proficient in data collection analysis
and report writing.
