The STOP Malaria
Project Background:
The STOP Malaria project is a flagship project of USAID/PMI Uganda.
The project aims to increase the coverage and use of key life-saving malaria
interventions in support of the National
Malaria Control Strategy in order to significantly reduce
the morbidity and mortality from malaria in Uganda. The project will be implemented
over a five year period starting in October 2008, and currently covers 34
highly malarious districts with a population of 10.3 million.
The STOP Malaria project offers a partnership uniquely positioned
to deliver this implementation rollout. Partners include the Center for
Communication Programs (CCP) of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School
of Public Health (the leading agency), Malaria Consortium, IDI, CDFU and UHMG. Malaria
Consortium is seeking a qualified Ugandan national to occupy the position of
Malaria Malaria Technical Team Leader (Mid Western Region).
Job Purpose:
The Malaria Technical Team Leader will be responsible for Coordinate
USAID Uganda STOP Malaria Project activities in Mid Western Region.
Key Accountabilities:
• Coordinate and provide technical support to DHTs in Mid Western
Region
• Lead the Mid Western Region Technical Team comprising: the
Technical Team Leader, Technical Officer ,Technical Assistant, and Driver
• Support the design, planning and implementation of both preventive
and curative interventions for STOP Malaria
• Be responsible for coordinating and implementing the following
interventions and activities in Mid Western Region:
- ANC LLIN distribution systems
- LLIN distribution campaigns
- Training health workers on increased intermittent preventive
treatment uptake among pregnant women
- Training health workers on the diagnosis of malaria using both
RDTs and microscopy
- Training health workers on management of severe malaria at
pre-referral and referral levels
- Improved treatment seeking behavior of careers of children
with febrile illnesses
- Improved support and supervision of malaria control interventions
at district level
• Represent the STOP Malaria Project at district and
regional level technical meetings and to external stakeholders in the Mid
Western Region
• Ensure the documentation of challenges, lessons learned, best
practices, and beneficiaries’ stories in the Mid Western region on a quarterly
and annual basis. Documentation will also include project activity
implementation reports.
• Together with the project M&E Team, review and analyze
project data to assess project performance in the Mid Western Region
• Liaise with and remain current on the activities of other partners
working in Mid Western Region on health issues, including malaria
• Undertake any other reasonable duties which may be allocated
from time to time by the Senior Malaria Technical Advisor.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
• Medical degree or degree in a related discipline. Masters
in health-related discipline is desired
• Good understanding of both preventive and curative aspects
of malaria control
• Experience in working with district health systems
• Experience managing and leading a team
• Experience in capacity building and training of health
workers
• Knowledge and experience working in a USAID funded
project
• Strong writing skills
• Ability to compile donor required reports
• At least 8 years experience of working in communicable disease
control, preferably malaria control
