Job Title: Assistant Accountant
Reports to: Finance Officer
Position Location: Mbarara - Uganda

Background:

Project Description:
JSI has received funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement
the Strengthening Partnerships, Results and Innovations in Nutrition Globally (SPRING) Project to work in the
Southwest of Uganda with a focus on strengthening the treatment and preventive nutrition services in health
facilities, and overseeing the implementation of specific tasks that strengthen food fortification efforts nationally.

Job Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Finance Officer (FO), the Assistant Accountant (AA) plays an integral role in carrying out the SPRING UGANDA accounting function in order to ensure the timely, accurate reporting of SPRING UGANDA financial and accounting information.

Key Result Areas
• To prepare and maintain accounting records, monthly reports and following up financial transactions with outside agencies and vendors.
• To disburse funds related to project activities in a reliable and timely way, ensuring proper accountability.

Specific duties shall include:
• Ensure safe custody of an adequate petty cash float, to be issued in accordance with SPRING UGANDA policies and procedures.
• Prepare payment vouchers and cheques, code and post all financial transactions in QuickBooks.
• Carry out cash disbursements during Trainings and other Technical activities.
• Photocopy all vouchers, back-up documentation and cheques as soon as the transactions are entered into quick books.
• Follow up with HR to ensure that timesheets are on time in support of the payroll voucher.
• Arrange voucher for dispatch to Home Office along with other Quick Books reports.
• Ensure that that all original documents are photocopied before they are dispatched to Washington.
• Follow up financial transactions with outside agencies & vendors as necessary.
• Provide support in reviewing staff Accountabilities and forward them for second review to FO

• Provide back up support in alerting staff for their pending travel Advances and the need for them to account as soon as the activity is completed.

Position Specifications:

Education:
A University degree in Business Studies (Finance or

Accounting option) or Professional Qualifications at level 2 of: ACCA, CPA, etc.

Experience
1. At least three years work experience in financial management.
2. Experience of accounting of International Donors program funds
3. Familiarity with USAID regulations and procedures desirable but not mandatory

Specific Knowledge or Skills Required:
1. Financial/accounting background
2. Excellent written and oral communication skills
3. Computer literate, proficient with Excel, Quick Books
4. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills
5. Ability to pay attention to detail
6. Strong skills in teamwork
