Job Description:
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for better and more sustainable use of livestock.
ILRI is a non-profit-making and non-governmental organization with headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a second principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We employ over 700 staff from about 40 countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium which works for a food-secure future.
Purpose of the role:
The East Africa Dairy Development project is a regional industry development program led by Heifer International in partnership with ILRI, TechnoServe, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the African Breeders Service Total Cattle Management. The project is being implemented in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The goal of this project is to help one million people – 179,000 families living on small 1-5 acre farms – lift themselves out of poverty through more profitable production and marketing of milk. Following the completion of the first phase of the project in 2011/12, the second phase is planned for 2013 to 2017 and will include Ethiopia and Tanzania. ILRI’s office in Kampala is located on the campus of Bioversity International. On behalf of ILRI, Bioversity International is now seeking a qualified candidate as Research Technician to provide effective technical support for the project.
Key responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and based at EADD – Heifer International’s office in Kampala, Uganda, the Research Technician is expected to carry out the following duties:
    Provide technical backstopping (including survey design, implementation, data cleaning and analysis) in the implementation of surveys and other data collection exercises in the EADD sites, as per the EADD Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation (MLE) framework;
    Analyse MLE data and present the results to EADD consortium partners and other stakeholders;
    Act as the ILRI contact person in the EADD country office.

Essential qualifications and competencies:
    BSc in agricultural economics or related field.
    A minimum of 5 years’ experience including experience working with producer organisation and/or other value chain actors in a RinD projects.
    Good knowledge of the livestock sector – particularly dairy- in Uganda.
    Experience with statistical packages such as SPSS, Stata or R.
    Excellent data management and analysis skills.
    Proficiency in the use of MS Office packages, as well as ability to develop databases and prepare required documentation from them.
    Fluency in oral and written English, and ability to communicate in Luganda.
    Strong interpersonal and communication skills, which will be key to facilitate stakeholder workshops and training programs for all actors of the value chain, as well as to participate and contribute effectively in a multicultural, multidisciplinary team.
    Strong analytical and synthesizing skills; ability to write clear and concise scientific documents.
    Highly effective multi-tasking skills, with ability to coordinate, prioritize, and organize workload, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
    Considerable judgment and initiative and the ability to work with a high degree of independence within assigned areas.
    Willingness to travel frequently.
    Motor cycle/light vehicles driving permit.
Desirable qualifications and competencies:
    MSc in Agricultural Economics or related field.
Terms and conditions:
This is a locally recruited professional position and all benefits are denominated and paid in Ugandan Shillings. Bioversity’s remuneration package includes a competitive salary, leave provisions and medical insurance. The initial contract will be for a period of one year, subject to a probationary period of six months and is renewable based on performance and availability of funds.
