Background
information:
The Consortium for enhancing University Responsiveness to
Agribusiness Development limited (CURAD) is a public-private partnership initiative
promoted by the Makerere University; the National Union of Coffee
Agribusinesses and Farm Enterprises (NUCAFE); the Nati onal Agricultural Research
Organisation (NARO); the University of Copenhagen (UC) and NIRAS International.
CURAD is funded by the Universiti es, Business & Research
in Agricultural Innovati on (UniBRAIN), an initi ati ve led by the Forum for
Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) supported by the Royal Danish Ministry
of Foreign Aff airs (DANIDA).
CURAD has established an agribusiness incubati on centre
based at the Makerere University Agricultural Research Insti tute at Kabanyolo.
The key outputs of the incubator will be mainly young
skilled entrepreneurs, profi table enterprises and
technological innovations and primarily dealing with
agricultural value chain piloting with coff ee value chain. The objecti ve is
to improve the effi ciency of marketing, to improve the quality of the product and
to capture more value added products in agricultural products e.g., coffee in
ways that will increase returns to the producers and create jobs locally.
CURAD is looking for a Coff ee-food technologist to provide
technical services in management coff ee and other food lab services and ensure
Quality Control in the value chain operati ons from the farm ti ll end
customer.

Duties and
Responsibilities of Food Technologist
The Coff ee-Food Technologist is expected to:
• Facilitate training of coff ee barista by training them in
appropriate coffee roasti ng, cupping and brewing skills.
• Be able to maintain the coff ee roasti ng equipment by
providing repair, maintenance routi ne services.
• Carry out value added product development acti viti es for
CURAD’s clients on coffee and other food products.
• Design recipes in development phase to ensure that nutritional
parameters are met before recipe is fi nalized.
• Carry out proximate analysis, nutriti onal evaluati on,
shelf life and microbiological evaluation.
• Conduct sensory evaluati on.
• Plan and execute scale-up trials at pilot and factory
level.
• Vendor development to achieve innovati on in ingredient
and process.
• Manage and enforce QC regulati ons at all levels of the
value chain operati ons.
• Coordinate delivery of services to clients on food
technology along with Technical Offi cers at the field.
• Assist the Managing Director in developing visionary partnerships
with the Consorti um Members.
• Facilitate linkage with Universiti es and Research Insti
tuti ons in the Consorti um to
test and develop new products by uti lizing their lab
infrastructure and experti se.
• Assist the Managing Director to:
o Develop Monitoring & Evaluati on reports in line with
requirements of UniBRAIN and updati ng of UniBRAIN-MICS.
o Conduct stakeholder and client surveys for the incubator.
o Prepare monthly arti cles, quarterly and annual reports on
incubator activities and clients.
o Prepare departmental annual report with data on job creati
on, revenue generated, food technology related sectors etc.
• Perform any other duti es assigned by the Managing
Director.
Desirable Qualifications:
General Skills Diploma or Graduate in Agricultural Engineering
or Food Science and Technology
Professional Skills
• At least 1 year experience in handling agricultural processing
equipment and coffee processed products and working on value chain.
• Experience in new product development.
• Knowledge and understanding of food laws and its applications
to food design and labeling.
Specific Professional
Skills
• Knowledge and experience in implementi ng GHPs, GMPs, SPS,
HACCP and commercializati on of food products.
• Basic computer skills in MS Offi ce package.
• Good writt en and oral communicati on in English and one
of the local dialects in Uganda
Other Conditions
o Nature of assignment: Job will be off ered on a one year
contract which can be extended for a further three years based on incumbent
performance. A positive attitude and passionate approach for the job will be
very much appreciated.
o The Food Technologist will report to the Managing
Director.
Location: Job
will involve extensive travelling to provide technician services such as coffee
shops. CURAD is based at the Makerere University Agricultural
Research Institute at Kabanyolo.
Remuneration
The Coffee-Food Technologist will earn an att racti ve gross
monthly remunerati on
based on performance.
