Background


The Government of Uganda launched the Peace Recovery and Development Plan (PRDP) which commenced implementation in July 2009 and now in a second phase running until June 2015. The main objective of PRDP2 is to complete the post-conflict recovery process; to strengthen the foundation for development in Northern Uganda; and to narrow the gap between Northern Uganda and the national average level of all socio-economic indicators. In this context, and building on previous UNDP engagements in Northern Uganda, UNDP will have interventions to support the implementation of PRDP2. The interventions will take place in the sub-regions of Karamoja, Acholi, Elgon and Lango.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Northern Uganda Programme Manager and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Advisor with overall reporting to the head of transport at UNDP, the project drivers will facilitate the transport services as required for the smooth implementation of the Northern Uganda Projects. The project drivers will be based in Kampala, Gulu, Lira, and Moroto respectively.

Duties and Responsibilities

  •     Ensures provision of reliable and secure driving services by driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other related goods and supplies in/out of Kampala under the authorization of the supervisor.
  •     Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  •     Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc.
  •     Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, and map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts.
  •     Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.
  •     Collect mail from Post Office and deliver outgoing mails to various destinations within the city.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:


    Secondary Education. Valid Driver’s license of at least 3 classes. 
    Certificate in Mechanics is an added advantage

Experience:

    5 years’ work experience as a driver; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair.

Language Requirements:

    Fluency in English.
    Knowledge of local languages of the area would be an asset
