SOS Children’s Villages Uganda is an indigenous non-government, social development organisation with membership to SOS Children’s Villages International, a worldwide child care organisation that provides children who have lost parental care, and those at risk of losing parental care with a permanent home and educational opportunities.
Established 60 years ago, SOS Children’s Villages International currently runs Children’s Villages and other projects in 135 countries around the world. We run two major programmes i.e Family Based Care based at SOS Children’s Villages and Family Strengthening Programmes supporting families in local communities. SOS has been working in Uganda since 1991, and runs Children’s Villages and other projects at Kakiri, Entebbe (Abaita Ababiri), Gulu and in Fort Portal – Kabarole district. SOS Uganda subscribes to a child protection policy.
We invite applications for the following vacancies at the SOS Children’s Villages Entebbe and Medical Centre Gulu.
1. Clinical Officer at SOS Medical Centre Gulu
The Clinical Officer shall provide leadership to the core operation of the Medical centre.
Responsibilities shall include;
• Performs clinical examinations, curative and preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines to patients, SOS children and communities.
• Implements and coordinates all health care programmes based at the SOS
Medical Centre in Gulu.
• Acts as a Liaison/networking to the District Health department and other medical agencies to facilitate implementation of quality health services and SOS programmes.
• Conduct medical procedures in an effective manner using universal health safety measures with all patients during procedures and examinations.
• Lead the implementation of quality health care and community health projects to our target groups in the community.
• Advises SOS families as well as members of our target groups on health and nutrition and refers SOS children, staff and beneficiaries for appropriate specialist consultation. Implement SOS medical care policy and procedures in line with other established government regulations.
• Builds a strong staff team to support the health programme
Minimum Requirements:
• The ideal candidate should be aged between 30 and 40 years with a diploma in clinical medicine or public health from a recognised institution.
• Prior experience in public health work in the local communities of Northern Uganda is desirable.
• At least 3 years working experience with NGO community and public health programmes based at a well established medical health facility/ project.
• Good knowledge and sound understanding of work practices of government and other health institutions and funding arrangements.
• Additional training and practice in health care management including HIV/AIDS and counseling will be an added advantage.
• Ability to work well in a team comprised of people with diverse cultural and disciplinary backgrounds. S/he should have strong leadership and good communication skills.
2. Village Educator at SOS
Children’s Village Entebbe
The Village Educator is responsible for planning and implementing educational programmes for individual children within the SOS Children’s Village and Youth Homes. The position reports to the Village Director (overall manager) and works closely with Youth development coworkers and teachers.
Responsibilities shall include, but
limited to:
• Support SOS mothers (care givers) to make development plans for individual
children in a stimulating learning environment.
• Coordinates all education needs for SOS children and acts as a link between SOS families, teachers and management of the schools attended by the children under our care.
• Takes charge of educational needs of each child, providing career guidance and ensuring that the children get meaningful assistance with remedial exercises/homework.
• Organise and implement children’s holiday programmes and other extracurricular activities.
• Provides regular sensitisation on the SOS child protection policy including other child rights guidelines.
• Establishes avenues (opportunities) for the overall development of each child/group of children.
Minimum Requirements:
• A mature individual aged between 25-33 years.
• A University degree in Education, Development Studies, Social Work, Social Sciences or an equivalent qualification.
• Experience in practical teaching or education liaison/coordination of at
least 3 years in a modern, well founded education institution. Qualification and experience in special needs education, counselling/guidance and psychosocial management of children.
• Sound knowledge of Uganda’s educational curriculum across all levels.
• Career guidance skills and involvement in music, drama, sports, or children’s clubs is required.
• Excellent knowledge of child rights and child protection issues.
• Good communications skills, written & spoken English language skills.
• S/he must be youthful, display much interest in educational matters and development of children, with a desire to help them attain greater educational and career development.
• Display much interest in various aspects of child development
