Background Information:

GHNU is an indigenous charity organisation established with a vision of promoting a society where a healthy life is a reality, a society that appreciates, respects and celebrates all life  and diversity, a society that encourages and supports local talents and abilities; a society where the rights of people guide policy decisions that impact on their lives and a mission of promoting, protecting and preserving the health of all Ugandans through good leadership, public private partnership, innovation and concerted action in Primary Health Care and Reproductive Health.
The organisation provides services in the areas of health with focus of maternal and child health, education, livelihoods and sanitation and hygiene. To enhance achievement of program goals the organisation applies general strategies of working with and through the communities, collaboration with the district local government in all districts and collaboration with other development partners and integration of services delivery.
The organisation is currently implementing four projects in Lango Sub regions, Northern Uganda, in the districts of Oyam, Otuke and Dokolo. The four programs focus on the following results; increasing uptake of maternal and child health services in catchment communities, improving community sanitation and hygiene, reaching out to young people in schools to improve on their physical and reproductive health outcomes, and empowering communities to alleviate poverty and reduce vulnerabilities. The primary targets for the organisation are children below five years of age, young people in school and women of child bearing age.
Position Overview:
The Research and Development Project Officer will manage and coordinate research and innovation project activities of Global Health Network (U) (GHNU) within given policy guidelines and operational objectives in order to facilitate and enhance work and continuous development of the research culture within GHNU.
The Project Officer will work at both the secretariat and field office on a 50/50% time in both locations.
S/he will provide technical knowledge in the conduct of ongoing researches, carry out research funding development with various stakeholders, and assist in the preparation and submission of high quality research proposals in response to new external funding opportunities.
Responsibilities
·             Co-ordinate GHNU research and innovations activities through working with relevant stakeholders, and provide necessary guidance to ensure consistency and coherence in the interpretation of GHNU criteria, principles, standards and norms in the evaluation of project proposals, implementation of sub projects and supervision of research activities.
·             Develop short and long-term implementation and monitoring plans, setting priorities and performance measures to guide the achievement of the research and innovations project targets.
·             Monitor the progress of research and innovation projects to ensure adherence to set standards, specifications, and agreed implementation time schedules.
·             Assist in the preparation and submission of high quality research proposals in response to new external funding opportunities.
·             Provide team leadership and support to project officers, interns to ensure timely and effective of the research processes.
·             Advise and make timely recommendations to Program Manager and ED on identified sub-project implementation strategies and targets, troubleshooting, operational problems, through reports, review meetings, and field supervision visits.
·             Organize specific seminars and workshops for respective actors on research and innovation for process and findings presentations; enforce shared understanding and working knowledge of GHNU operational systems, tools, and procedures.
·             Ensure timely preparation and dissemination of reports.
·             Liaise closely with all GHNU crosscutting functions, local government leadership and officials to build rapport and shared operational vision, thereby enhancing cooperation in the design and implementation of sub-projects in each district.
·             Generate specific outputs (deliverables) as determined from time to time in the respective projected work plans for each quarter.
·             Perform any other duties as may be assigned to him/her from time to time.

Skills and Experience

·             Bachelor’s degree*
·             Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications*
·             Experience writing proposals and securing funding for research projects*
·             Excellent project management skills, including setting priorities and performance measures as well as meeting deadlines on time and on budget*
·             Polished verbal communication and presentation*
·             Track record of successful reports/publications summarizing research findings
·             Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills
·             Experience managing grants and/or donor relationships, i.e. writing grant reports
·             Confidence navigating databases and academic search engines
·             Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop good working relationships within and outside the team.
·             Highly organized and able to prioritize and multitask to meet tight deadlines
·             Willingness to travel and reside in Oyam district
·             Self-starter and a strategic thinker, analytical and creative
·             Ability to work independently and under pressure
·             Ability to function well in a diverse, cross-cultural work environment
