Organizational Profile:
Peace Corps is an international autonomous agency of the US Government with
operations in over 70 countries. It operates in Uganda by the invitation of the
Government of Uganda. Peace Corps Uganda has memoranda of understanding with
government ministries that outline broad areas of agreement of cooperation regarding
the work of Peace Corps Volunteers in Uganda. Volunteers are assigned to
government and non-government agencies and organizations, community based
organizations, universities, colleges and schools who partner to enable
Volunteers to provide capacity building in Literacy Education, Health,
Agriculture and Medical and Nursing Education; also aims to build cultural
understanding between Americans and Ugandans.
About the Let Girls Learn Project
This project is being launched with an expected project cycle of several
years. The Peace Corps will work with donors, foundations and other
organizations to support and further girls' education and empowerment, with
three overarching objectives in mind:
To increase attention and efforts
around adolescent girls' secondary education
To address the range of factors
that impede girls from enrolling in or completing secondary education
To improve the quality of
education in communities where the program is implemented
All Peace Corps Volunteers will be encouraged to participate in this
program either as part of their primary assignment and/or by engaging in
community/secondary activities. Anticipated activities for this program include
enhanced community analysis, and gender/diversity training for Volunteers and
their counterparts. There will be a small grants fund for community-based
projects aimed at girls' empowerment.
Position Summary
The Let Girls Learn Program Coordinator, under the direction of the
Director of Programming and Training (or designee), is the principal point of
contact for this program at post. This is a one-year position with two option
years, subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
In collaboration with the Peace Corps Uganda Country Director and Director
of Programming and Training, as well as Let Girls Learn colleagues in the
Africa Region as well as Washington, DC, the Coordinator is responsible for
contributing to strategic programmatic design, adaptation and delivery of
Volunteer training related to gender and community development, administration
and support for post's grants program and project monitoring and reporting. The
Coordinator will also be expected to provide Volunteer support including
coaching and managing Volunteers as they develop intercultural skills,
professional development and attention to safety and security.
S/He will likely represent Peace Corps at inter-agency meetings related to
girls' education and empowerment. The position requires approximately 25%
travel within country. There may be limited international travel.
Major duties and reponsibilities
1. Program management
Serves as the point of contact
for this program
Provides orientations and
technical support to Peace Corps Volunteers, staff and communities on gender
issues, through:
- Project
design
- Site
development
- Site visits
In coordination with post's
grants coordinator, manages the Volunteer grant program related to this
initiative. The coordinator will be expected to:
- Coach
Volunteers and their community partners on the development of appropriate and
promising proposals
- Assists
grant coordinator and participates in posts' grants review committee
- Monitors
and tracks implementation of grants
- Provides
technical support in closing out projects and evaluating impact.
Develops and maintains strong and
productive working relationships with the government, NGOs and other local
organizations to further gender-related activities
Participates in regional and
agency events
2. Training
Adapts global training content
provided by Peace Corps headquarters to Post's programmatic and cultural
context
Ensures integration of gender
training content throughout post's training continuum
Delivers training on gender
content in coordination with programming and training staff
At the request of post leadership
provides training to post staff on gender issues and approaches.
3. Monitoring, Reporting and Evaluation
Monitors program progress,
summarizes available data and prepares documentation for multiple stakeholders,
including PC/Washington
Informs relevant host country
government officials of gender-related activities and seeks guidance for
allignment with host country priorities.

5. Required Qualifications
Education and experience [first
option]: Masters degree in Education or Social Sciences or related field
preferably with an emphasis on gender; and 4 years' experience, 8 years is
desirable, working within development projects including designing,
implementing and reporting using appropriate analysis
Education [substitute option]: Bachelors
degree in Education or Social Sciences or related field with experience
preferably with an emphasis on gender and 4 years' experience, 8 years is
desirable, working within development projects including designing,
implementing and reporting using appropriate analysis.
Desired:
- Experience in
training using non-formal education techniques
- Experience in
gender-related programming and training
- Project management
experience, including budget oversight
- Experience in
monitoring and reporting to varied stakeholders
Skills and abilities:
- Excellent
computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet programs; excellent
command of English, both spoken and written
- Ability to work
within a team and also work independently with little supervision; good
organization and time management skills; willingness to take the initiative;
excellent teamwork skills, strong
service attitude; personal integrity;
strong cross-cultural skills;
strong interpersonal skills, strong interest in Uganda's development.

willingness to travel extensively
- Ability to work
on a regular Monday through Friday schedule with evening and weekend hours when
necessary

travel throughout Uganda as needed for implementation of the program and as in
line with the job

work in Uganda
