Organizational Profile:
Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS is an
internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV infection
and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the revolving epidemic, the
evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention, and the
development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. The Unit’s
head offices are located at the Uganda Virus Research Institute- Entebbe
Campus, and the main research activities in Masaka, Kalungu, Kampala and Wakiso
districts, including the peri-urban areas of Entebbe.
Job Purpose:
To ensure that the electrical and HVAC equipment & infrastructure of
the Unit is fully functional and fit for purpose at all times across all the
field stations. To conduct a scheduled maintenance programme and ensure that
planned maintenance outages are aligned with research activity to minimise
disruption. To ensure all electrical and power installations are safe, secure
and adequately maintained.
Roles and responsibilities:

Assemble, install, test, and
maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and
fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
·
Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test
equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the
problem.
·
Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards,
defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with
codes.
·
Ensuring that maintenance works that
are carried out are of high standard and best practice.
·
Carry out planned maintenance works
of electrical equipment and HVAC as per scheduled.
·
Ensuring that all activities and
installations comply with best practice in electrical installation and relevant
electrical safety standards.
·
To inspect and keep in good order,
the Unit's electrical and HVAC installations to ensure their continued
availability and serviceability.
·
To monitor the status of the nitrogen plant and nitrogen stocks at the MRC
Entebbe facility.
·
To monitor the service hours' status of MRC nitrogen plant, air
conditioners and freezers.
·
Ensure that you respond to all
emergency repairs service for all breakdowns and outages promptly and
efficiently and ensure "on call" maintenance emergency support 24/7.
·
To carry out routine service of freezers, water stills, air conditioners
and generators in Entebbe.
·
To ensure the safety of the MRC
workshop facility in Entebbe.
·
To respond quickly to electrical
installation and HVAC faults reported in Masaka, Kyamulibwa, Kampala and
Entebbe.
·
To ensure that the sample
temperature monitoring system is operational and produce test-runs weekly.
·
To check on the operation/working
order of toilets, doors, windows, fasteners, switches and the general condition
of all Entebbe MRC buildings.
Person Specifications:
·
Diploma in Electrical Engineering
from a recognised institution
·
Hands on experience with Electrical,
Refrigeration and ventilation equipment (cold store) and installations &
maintenance of solar power
·
At least 5 years' experience in a
busy industrial setting
·
Proficiency in measuring instruments
and hands-on experience in wiring and installing electrical switchgear
·
Ability to use a computer and write reports
