AFRICA PROGRAMME
Working closely with local partners, FFI’s Africa Programme currently
operates in 14 countries in West, Central, East and Southern Africa, and is
implementing a range of projects focused on species and habitat conservation,
biodiversity planning, protected area management, institutional development and
capacity building, sustainable use and community-focused wildlife management
initiatives. FFI’s Uganda country office was initially established to support
the development of projects that integrate cultural values and biodiversity
conservation, implemented in partnership with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)
at Lake Mburo and Rwenzori National Parks in south and western Uganda.
Additional Cultural Values & Conservation (CVC) projects are now underway
with local partners at Semliki, Bwindi, and Mgahinga National Parks, and the
programme is now being extended to prioritise community-based conservation of
wetlands within the Lake Victoria basin, support to conservation of forests and
habitat corridors in the Albertine Rift, and proactive engagement with the
private sector and addressing the biodiversity impacts and opportunities linked
to extractive developments in the Albertine Nile Basin
THE OPPORTUNITY
FFI is seeking a Programme Manager who, as part of a small team, will
provide support to UWA and FFI’s other local partners in Uganda, and have
responsibility for the development, implementation and delivery of FFI’s
programme of projects in Uganda. We are looking for a highly experienced and
motivated individual with strong operational experience for project management
and reporting, logistics, staff training and mentoring, institutional
strengthening and effective participation of local communities in programme
activities.
Key Relationships:
Internal
The Programme Manager shall work in close collaboration with the Country
staff that include the Finance and Administrative Officer, field-based staff
and project site coordinators in specific project areas. The Programme Manager
will also work closely with the Africa Programme Coordinator, the finance team
and the Regional Director all based in Cambridge.
External
The Programme Manager will routinely
liaise with identified district local governments, community-based
organisations, civil society organisations, protected areas management, partner
organisations and institutions, and the private sector, representing the values
and interests of FFI at all times.
Main responsibilities:
1. Provide overall technical support to the on-going projects being
implemented in partnership with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the United
Organisation of Batwa Development in Uganda (UOBDU), the Institute of Tropical
Forest Conservation (ITFC) and District Local Authorities of Rakai, Kisoro,
Kabale and Kanungu.
2. Support conservation partners in Uganda in their efforts to improve
biodiversity conservation effectiveness through development of guidelines and
policies based on lessons learned from implementation of approaches that take
into account human needs, such as the cultural values and conservation
approach.
3. In accordance with the Africa Programme Strategy and FFI’s Business
Plan, continue to develop programme areas in Uganda together with and working
through local partners and the private sector whose programmes impact key
biodiversity areas (KBA).
4. Support conservation partners both governmental and non-governmental
organisations in their efforts to manage wildlife and conserve biodiversity.
5. Continue to nurture already developed relations with conservation
partners, local community based organisations, cultural institutions, donors
and Identify more key local partners to work with, in developing a programme in
the identified programme areas.
Other Country Office core functions
·
Working with the Regional Director
and other UK-based technical FFI staff, ensure preparation of annual budgets,
technical reports and information for auditors and facilitate cash transfers
for specific ongoing projects.

Ensure core services to projects
provided through the Uganda programme office are delivered and budgeted for and
manage the Uganda office budget.
·
Ensure development and
implementation of operational and staffing procedures to ensure effective
implementation of the Uganda programme.
·
Manage and motivate in-country staff
under line management through objective setting, continuous performance management,
annual appraisal, training provision and personal development planning.
·
Undertake any other administrative
functions and plans as may be discussed and agreed with the Regional Director.

engagement with private sector companies, particularly in the extractive and
agriculture sectors

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

End Date: Two year fixed-term contract, with potential to extend subject to business
need and funding availability.
