Brief Company Profile:
Africa Agribusiness Academy was formed two years ago by a group of Dutch
Agrifood companies, in cooperation with Wageningen University and Research
Centre and Sokoine University of Agriculture,
Department of Agricultural
Economics and Agribusiness, Tanzania. These partners took the initiative of
supporting the establishment of the Africa Agribusiness Academy (AAA). This
initiative was in response to the fact that food security in Africa can and
must be improved. The quickest and most efficient way to reach this goal is to
support small producers to feed themselves and produce marketable surpluses.
The AAA is looking for a Secretary General who, in believing in the above
mission will harness the achieved milestones, build further on its many
achievements and expand the Academy across Africa.
This is a major appointment for the Academy and the new Secretary General
will lead the organisation, be responsible for its performance and together
with the Board, helps shape the AAA’s strategic direction and its
implementation.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To manage and provide overall strategic leadership to the AAA so as to
ensure that it realizes its Vision and Mission within approved budget through
leading, organising, staffing and coordinating all activities as charted out in
the prevailing approved Strategic Plan and manage staff members of the
Secretariat.
RESPONSIBILITIES (KEY RESULT AREAS)
1. Organizing and guiding the implementation of the strategic and
operational plan of the AAA
a. Draft annual activity plans with accompanying budgets and submitting the
same to the AAA Board at least one month prior to the financial year.
b. Guide country chapter boards and steer country chapter directors,
monitor their chapter plans, and ensure they are in harmony with the AAA
prevailing approved strategic plan.
2. Membership and business development:
a. Articulate, design, and implement activities for members to enhance
their entrepreneurial skills relevant to the development of their businesses.
b. Support to members and non-members through the development of a suite of
services relevant to their business.
c. Manage the membership database, organize, and strategise to work with
chapter leaders to enhance recruitment of new members and maintain their
register up-to-date.
3. Accounting function
a. Being the custodian of AAA financial and other resources prepare and
submit to the Board, Statutory Annual Financial Statements within three months
of the end of each financial year for adoption and onward approval to Auditors.
b. Provide all general operational information related to the functioning
of AAA that may include financial and administrative data through “Quarterly,
Annual Operational and Financial Performance Reports” and submit the same to
the Board.
4. Administrative functions
a. Be a Secretary to the Board with responsibilities of liaising with the
Chairman in preparing all scheduled and extra-ordinary meetings of the Board,
as it may deem necessary and maintain a good record of the minutes of the
meetings.
b. Attend Board meetings if invited to do so.
c. Implement decisions of the Board within the set budget to ensure
effective management of the Academy and day-to-day activities are accomplished
successfully.
d. Provide leadership to the secretariat that may be growing given the
requirements of the implementation of the strategic plan.
e. Oversee and implement human resource management including recruitment,
roles and responsibilities, remunerations, performance management, learning and
developments, appraisals and disciplinary matters to enhance effective result
oriented culture and implementations of daily tasks and activities at the
secretariat.
COMPETENCE AND EXPERIENCE
1. African national with proven experience of working in a multi
stakeholder environment preferably in the agribusiness industry.
2. Demonstrated record of accomplishment of visionary and transformational
strategic leadership and planning preferably in a regional African
organisation.
3. Excellent abilities to work and achieve results through teams and a good
grasp of human resource management skills.
4. A self-propelling entrepreneur with abilities to influence and drive
change at all levels of agribusiness value chain.
5. An individual with excellent inter-personal skills and ability to manage
dialogues and facilitations.
6. Outgoing, extrovert and charismatic individual.
7. Forward looking and customer needs driven individual.
PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES:
- Specific targets to be agreed for each Key Result Area
KEY RELATIONS
1. The Secretary General will work in close collaboration with the Director
of the WUR/SUA Support Project and report jointly to the Board of Directors of
AAA, but will eventually be accountable to the Board of Directors of AAA
2. Inter act extensively with all Key Stakeholders of AAA; the leading
stakeholder are the members.
3. Inter act extensively with senior officials in the Governments in Africa
and Development Partners where necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Masters Degree holder preferably in Agribusiness or alternatively in
Social Sciences or Public Finance, Economics or Public Administration.
2. Professional Accounting Qualification, Information Technology,
Monitoring and Evaluation will be an added advantage.
3. Extensive knowledge of using social media and computer software like MS
Office and Project is a prerequisite.
EXPERIENCE
At least ten years of experience at a senior level in managing, planning,
coordinating, financing, and monitoring in private sector development. This
experience must be either, regionally or internationally and preferably in
agribusiness and as an entrepreneur.
CONTRACT PERIOD
The Secretary General will be engaged on a contract of two years and its
renewal will be subject to Performance Results.
MACHINERY, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Extensive use of Laptops and their accessories, Scanner, iPad and its
equivalent, self drive with an international driving license and good knowledge
of using social media networks and electronic communication platforms.
WORKING CONDITION
· Extensive travelling locally, regionally and internationally
· Extensive social and professional interactions.
· Extra hours of work may be required
· Multiplicity of meetings and disruptions can be expected
