Background Information:
Work on a project that seeks to reduce violence against women in
sub-Saharan Africa and improve access to justice.
Gender-based violence is of increasing concern in sub-Saharan Africa.
ActionAid Uganda focuses on tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice
and its programs are primarily concerned with defending and raising awareness
of human rights.
The Transitional Justice Research Project investigates the experiences of
recurrent violence in northern Uganda, Kenya and Democratic Republic of Congo
and the barriers confronting women in accessing justice and realising their
human rights. By engaging survivors of gender-based violence in dialogue with
policy makers and key stakeholders, the project seeks to reduce violence
against women.
A highly motivated AVID volunteer is being sought to work on this project.
The volunteer will assist with a range of activities including: research
including literature reviews, general administrative support, organising and
coordinating key informant interviews, and assisting the Women's Rights
Coordinator for Uganda with violence against women initiatives.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
Strong research skills and an
understanding of qualitative research methodologies
Knowledge of women's rights
issues in the region and gender justice issues in conflict
Qualifications in social science
and/or law or other relevant discipline
Self awareness, cultural
sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
