Overall purpose of the position : To lead the HIV vaccine
research studies
Background Information:
The MRC/UVRI Research Unit on AIDS is a bilateral multi-disciplinary
research organisation funded by Medical Research Council (UK). DFID (UK) and
other donor organisations and has been operational in Uganda since 1988. It is
a centre of excellence in research conducting large-scale epidemiological and
intervention studies, clinical trials, biological and immunological research
and behavioural studies which have generated a wealth of research results to
inform policy and practice. The Unit is based at Uganda Virus Research
Institute, Entebbe with field stations at Masaka. Kampala and Kyamulibwa. It
has conducted a wide range of research which has informed policy and practice
and led to a large number of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals.
MRC/UVRI is seeking a suitably qualified, experi-enced, and self-motivated
individual to join a team of dedicated clinical and research staff working on
HIV vaccine research studies within the HIV Prevention and Epidemiology
Programme. The post will be based at the Unit's station in Masaka.
Terms: The position will be remunerated according to the MRC/UVRI Uganda Unit pay
scales. The initial appointments will be for a period of up to 2 years with a
possibility of extension subject to performance and availability of funds.
Key roles and responsibilities
• Planning and
implementing HIV vaccine research studies according to best practice.
• Coordinating and working
with other Unit staff, col¬laborating partners, sponsors, and funders.
• Contributing to the
development of study protocols, research
tools and other relevant documents.
• Overseeing data entry,
management and analysis.
• Initiating and
contributing to scientific publications.
• Ensuring compliance with
local and international clinical
research regulatory guidelines.
• Coordinating and
facilitating study monitoring and auditing visits, respond to any
monitoring/audit find-ings and implement approved recommendations.
• Managing study resources
(finances, personnel, equipment, facilities) in compliance with unit and
sponsor accountability requirements.
• Training and developing
capacity of junior staff.
• Participating in strategic
planning for the pro-gramme.
Essential requirements
• A minimum of Bachelor of
Medicine and Surgery and a postgraduate qualification in Public Health,
Epidemiology, or other related disciplines.
• Minimum of 5 years'
experience in HIV epidemio- logical and
clinical research.
• Good managerial and
organizational skills.
• Literate and able to use
Microsoft Office programs
• Excellent written and
oral English communication skills.
• Ability to work within a
multidisciplinary team.
• Self-motivated and able
to work with minimal super-vision.
• ICH-GCP and Human
Subjects Protection training
• Experience in HIV care.
• Evidence of authoring
peer reviewed articles.
• A good understanding of
Luganda
