Background Information
Association of World Education (AWE Uganda National Chapter)
is an autonomous organization established in September 2005 soon after the
United Nations World Submit for Social
Development held in Copenhagen Denmark by a group of college
teachers who believed in learning ourselves and our communities was most
effective and satisfying when education reflected an awareness of our intimate relationship
to world as a whole. The Late Professor Dani Nabudere, who attended the summit
met the founders of AWE, grasped the vision and on his return he shared it with
some of his friends in Uganda who have since then advanced the vision into
practice.
AWE –UNC is largely recognised by the laws of Uganda through
registration with the NGO Board (Reg. 5914/4436), as a company limited by
guarantee (Reg. 57564) and registered by the Department of Community Based
Services of Nakapiripirit District Local Government (NK/042/05) as an NGO.
AWE-UNC is organized on national basis and aims at establishing
branches in the most marginalized areas of the country as Chapters in the
respective areas of interest with the aim of addressing local needs for the
empowerment of the Community. AWE-UNC currently is operating in North Eastern
Uganda with a vision of promoting “Enlightened individuals and communities who
care for one another irrespective of their background in a free and just world”
and AWE-UNC is committed to its mission of “enabling individuals and communities
to better their livelihood by learning from one another through dialogue and
self- empowerment” through taking charge of the decision making that influences
and affects their lives.
The aim of AWE- UNC program is to create community awareness
of their democratic rights, duties and responsibilities and enable them to demand
for their rights as citizens of the country (Uganda) from the duty holders and
at the same time engage positively and effectively in the process of decision
making. The organization currently is engaging in program of Participation in
Democracy and Good Governance with emphasis on empowering communities to
effective and informed participation in positive engagement with the duty
bearers in development. The planned period is initially to run from January
2013 to December 2015 with possibility of extension.
The organization is currently seeking to recruit competent
persons to fill the following positions:-
DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMES
Duty Station:
Mbale /NAKAPIRIPIRIT
Contract Period:
One year (renewable depending on staff performance)
Under the supervision of the National Executive Committee,
The Director of Programs is responsible for all matters related to the component
of the project on “Promoting Good
Governance and Accountability”.
S/he willexecute
her/his tasks in full collaboration with other programmes and administrative
staff, and in line with the organization’s established rule and regulations.
The officer should possess technical expertise in one or more of the following
areas: Good Governance, Democracy Promotion, Local Governance and community engagement.
It is essential that candidates demonstrate prior
proficiency with proposal writing, M&E and report writing and possessing ability
to promoting team spirit.
Qualifications and
Attributes:
• Honors degree in Social work and Social Administration,
Development Studies or its equivalent.
• Should be knowledgeable in Development Economics,
Political economy, Local Government operations and processes.
• Must be a mature person with 3years working experience in
a senior management position preferably in an NGO environment.
• Computer knowledge is a must with the following packages
Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet and Access.
• A person must be self motivated / driven and able to work
with others.

Contract period:

Director of Programmes, the Program Officer is responsible for all matters
related to the component of the project on “Promoting Good Governance and Accountability”.
S/he will execute her/his tasks in full collaboration with other programmes and
administrative staff, and in line with the organization’s established rule and
regulations.
The officer should possess technical expertise in one or
more of the following areas: Good Governance, Democracy promotion, Local Governance
and community engagement. It is essential that candidates demonstrate prior proficiency
with proposal writing, M&E and report writing.
Experience and
ability to engage and work closely with the community is an added advantage.
The incumbent must
possess:
• A minimum requirement of BA Degree in Development Studies,
Social Sciences, and any other related discipline with familiarity on Local
Governance, Good Governance and Social Accountability.
• At least three years of experience working with Civil
Society Organizations.
• Strong organizational, administrative, analytical skills
and HR management skills
• Experience & skills in planning, proposal writing,
M&E and reporting
• Ability to develop and implement effective work plans.
• Ability to manage and priorities demanding work load
• Commitment, accountability, transparency & responsibility
• Excellent public speaking, interpersonal, communication
skills and ability to work with diverse people and partners.

Required
Qualifications:
• Degree or Diploma in Business Studies from a recognised
institution in Uganda
• Profession Qualifications in Accounting (ACCA or CPA level
2)
• 3 - 4 years of experience in similar positions with
reputable organizations will be an added advantage,
• Demonstrable technical skills in accounting and financial
management
• Demonstrable ability to develop budgets, forecasts and
financial reports
