The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking to recruit a
dynamic and experienced Socioeconomist as Research Assistant to support its
project activities in sweet potato and potato value chains in Sub-Sahara Africa
(SSA) region. The Research Assistant is a full-time position based in the CIP
Uganda Liaison Office in Kampala.
The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international
agricultural research organization with a global mandate to conduct research on
genetic resources of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other
Andean roots and tubers, crop genetic enhancement and improvement,
integrated crop management and sustainable management of natural resources.
The CIP projects work through a value-chain approach that involves
several stakeholders A major component of these projects is the measurement and
demonstration of adoption and impacts.
Duties and
responsibilities:
The Research Assistant will support the implementation and
impact assessment of CIP project activities in the SSA region and will
specifically be required to:

Contribute in designing and implementing field
surveys and other socio-economic research activities. ü Assist in the preparation
of data entry templates and cleaning of socioeconomic datasets.

Compile, analyze and rigorously document primary
and secondary socioeconomic datasets.
·
Assist in literature, bibliographic and data
searches and preparation of draft review of necessary literature.
·
Contribute in developing research reports,
conference papers, journal articles and policy briefs.
·
Handle other reasonable duties that may be
assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: M.Sc
degree from a recognized university in agricultural economics, economics or any
other related field of applied economics.
Experience: At
least 2 years of demonstrated work experience in similar positions and track
record of
publications commensurate with years of experience.
Specifically,
experience is needed in:
i) Designing and implementing household and market surveys
under varied socio-cultural and economic environments;
ii) Coordination and supervision of data entry; and,
iii) Management and analysis of large socioeconomic datasets
using standard statistical and econometric software (preferably SPSS and/or
STATA).
Training:
Agricultural economics; agricultural development; development economics; or
resource economics. Training under collaborative master’s in agricultural and
applied economics is an added advantage.
Skills: Good
econometrics, statistics and research methods skills are mandatory; knowledge
of experimental economics essential; combination of good analytical, writing
and field work skills, scientific rigor, initiative, ability to work independently,
good English (oral & written), ability to work in multicultural & multidisciplinary
environment, and computer skills (MS office, SPSS, STATA) are required.
Terms of appointment: Initial appointment is (fixed term)
for one year with a possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance
and the availability of funding. CIP offers a multicultural and collegial
