The African Prisons Project (APP) is a group of people passionately
committed to improving access to
healthcare, education, justice and
rehabilitation for prisoners in Africa. We aim to restore the dignity of those
we serve by helping to provide humane conditions and services which help them
to regain their dignity. We build and refurbish prison medical and educational
facilities to provide innovative services and work to change the attitudes of
the societies we serve when it comes to criminal justice issues.
Job Summary:
The Communications and PR Specialist will work closely with the programme
teams to support APP’s Communication Strategy by preparing and producing
publicity material, corporate publications, and translation, as well as
supporting PR events.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Work in consultation with the
Senior Management Team to oversee the development of organisational
communications strategy, website and Annual Report and other such important
publication material.
·
Develop and implement media
strategies in support of organisational and campaign aims in partnership with
the relevant departments.
·
Acts in line with detailed
communications and PR strategy, and accordingly prepares plans for supporting
media relations and publicity that would help promote and publicise APP’s name
and activities amongst the right audience.
·
Actively coordinates and follows
up with other departments on implementing publicity activities such as press
releases, internal publications, reports, press conferences etc.
·
Compiles and supervises a media
database for newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, and websites to be targeted by
APP’s media relations campaigns coinciding with key events such as the human
rights day.
·
Actively coordinates APP’s PR and
staff events in coordination with the programmes team and others.
·
Handles sponsorship activities.
·
Identify appropriate media
outlets or international opportunities for conferencing, meetings and arranges
speaking slots for APP at such events as part of the on-going marketing
campaign.

Evaluate and report on the reach
and impact of media activities through regular media monitoring and contribute
copy to campaign evaluations.
·
Research and author articles for APP
and other social media sites, newsletters and other media outlets.
·
Manage the updating of media
platforms including all exciting accounts and researching for new media
opportunities to market APP’s work further.
·
To maintain an events calendar
working with all programmes teams across APP global to ensure that a regular
presence of our work is maintained on social and other media platforms.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
·
The applicant should have
attained tertiary qualifications and workplace based experience in media, PR
and/or communications.
·
Significant experience in
partner/sponsor/stakeholder liaison with strong interpersonal skills with a
capacity for conflict resolution, relationship management and diplomacy.
·
Past experience in developing and
implementing media plans and strategies to achieve specific aims and
objectives.
·
Excellent verbal and written
communication skills and experience in writing media releases, articles and
externally focused communications for a range of audiences.
·
Strong time management skills
with proven ability to manage several projects at once, to prioritise work and
to work under pressure to meet tight timeframes.
·
Computer literacy skills with
demonstrated ability in generic computer packages such as Microsoft Office and
some familiarity with the internet, databases and social networking platforms.
·
Prior experience in managing and
motivating staff or volunteers.
·

communication skills

Possess the ability to represent
the APP in a variety of fora
·
Strong project planning skills
with proven ability to organize and prioritize tasks and to manage own time
