Job title: Data Collector/Interviewer (15 positions)

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) is a global leader in the fight against pediatric HIV and AIDS, working in 17 countries and at 4,700 sites around the world to prevent the
transmission of HIV to children, and to help those already infected.
Today, because of the highly successful work of the Foundation and its partners, pediatric AIDS has been virtually eliminated in the United States. With a growing global staff of nearly 1,300—nine of 10 who work in the field—the Foundation’s global mission is to implement prevention, care, and treatment; further advance innovative research; and to execute strategic and targeted global advocacy activities to bring dramatic change to the lives of millions of women, children, and families worldwide.

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) is implementing a 3-year Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funded project: Advancing Community Level Action
for Improving MNCH/PMTCT outcomes (ACCLAIM).
The goal of the Uganda ACCLAIM (Advancing Community- Level Action for Improving MCH/PMTCT) project is to increase community demand for, uptake of, and retention in maternal and
child health (MCH)/Prevention of Mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services to improve country progress towards elimination of pediatric HIV/AIDS. Therefore (EGPAF) seeks to
recruit the above positions:
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Data Collectors/Interviewers and Data Collector Supervisors will be responsible for identifying eligible respondents in households, communities and health facilities to be interviewed in areas assigned. The exercise will last for estimated 35 days
Tasks:
• Maintain hardcopy of data collected in compliance with the study protocols
• Participate in the training workshop (including the day of the pre-test) about the survey methodology and implementation.
• Locate the sample households within the geographical area assigned
• Identify all eligible respondents in selected households.
• Solicit for consent from eligible respondents.
• Conduct face to face interviews and or key informant interviews (KIIs) with the selected respondents using the study questionnaires and interview guides.
• Check completed interviews to be sure that all questions were asked and responses neatly and legibly recorded.
• Return to households to interview respondents who could not be interviewed during the initial visit.
• Participate in team review meetings after each day of data collection.
• Transcribe the audio recording through hand writing in the same language
• Translate the transcribed content into English through hand writing
• Responsible for any organization’s device or property handed over to for use during the exercise
Roles of the supervisor
In addition to the specific tasks and responsibilities to the data collector/interviewer the Supervisor will be responsible for;
• Establishment of the availability of household lists at the village level.
• Do spot-checks on the research Assistants while in the field
• Conduct and observe some of the interviews
• Review questionnaires for completeness and consistency
• Manage the data quality control process
• Meet with research assistants on a daily basis to discuss performance and assign work as appropriate
• Provide technical support to Data Collector/Interviewer in resolving process issues including but not limited to selection of household, understanding the questionnaire
• Coordinate the research assistants, the community and the project staff to update on
• Provide support for day to day logistical mobilization
Qualifications, knowledge and other desirables.
• An under-graduate degree in statistics, demography, population studies, development studies, Social Sciences, Public Health or other related discipline
• Good understanding of research methodologies, including research ethics
• Hands-on knowledge and skills in primary data collection using structured and un-structures approaches in the communities
• Good interviewing and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness travel, work and spend about 3 weeks in rural settings of south western Uganda.
• Fluency in English required. Must be able to read and write Runyakitara without any difficulty Ability to transcribe audio
recordings, and translate from Runyakitara to English
• Experience in data collection using devices, i.e. computers and audio recorders
